15 Minutes with Booboo featuring "The Monster" Abyss
TNAwrestling.com is happy to have Booboo Stewart join our online staff! Booboo is one of the most popular young stars in Hollywood, and appears in the upcoming "Twilight" movie saga. Booboo will be conducting regular interviews with the TNA Wrestling Superstars
Hello TNA Wrestling fans. Welcome back to another 15 Minutes with me, Booboo Stewart. After my first interview with AJ Styles, I wanted to continue interviewing the cool and unique personalities in TNA so that brings us to this week’s guest, the 6’8”, 350 lbs. monster, Abyss! He is my favorite wrestler in all of TNA and this past Saturday, I had the chance to speak with him. Check it out!
Boo: Hi Abyss. Thanks for joining me here on TNAwrestling.com.
Abyss: You got it. I am really looking forward to this interview and am very excited that you picked me!
Boo: So first, did you know my dad went dressed as you for Halloween??? Haha.
Abyss: Actually I did. Brian from the TNA headquarters emailed me the picture and I was impressed. It was awesome to see you had actually thought enough of me to have your dad dress up as me for Halloween. It is my favorite holiday ya know!! Haha. He posed a striking resemblance to me. For a minute I thought we might make great TNA Tag Team Champions together. Seriously, it was a great feeling and I actually felt really honored that he did that especially when he could have chosen ANY TNA superstar.
Boo: The tag team thing could be interesting. My dad is a former pro wrestler and he is pretty large such as your self. How does it feel being so large???
Abyss: It feels great. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely has its pluses and minuses, but overall its a blessing and it always has been. I’ve been big since I was born. I weighed 12 pounds when I was born so I’ve been large since I entered this world. My size is a blessing. My size opened up opportunities my whole life. My size enabled me to be a good football player in high school receiving all state honors in Ohio. My size enabled me to get a full scholarship to Ohio University which in turn, allowed me to receive both my bachelor’s degree and my Masters degree. Most importantly, my size and my athletic ability allowed me to become a professional wrestler and in my opinion, one of the best big men to compete in pro wrestling. Of course, I have trouble fitting in a coach airplane seat, dialing my cell phone, or sleeping on a normal hotel room bed. But, overall, my size has been and continues to be a blessing.
Boo: What’s the funniest or oddest thing that has ever happened to you because of your size???
Abyss: That’s a tough question because I have so many memories of different things that have happened to me because of my size. Probably the funniest thing that has ever happened to me because of my size has occurred in several amusement parks across the country since my teen years. On countless occasions, I have had to do what I call "The walk of shame". The "Walk of Shame" is when I stand in line at an amusement park for the most popular roller coaster in the park along with several hundred, sometimes thousands of other roller coaster riding patrons. When I come to the head of the line and it’s my turn, I eagerly enter the roller coaster seat only to find that I don’t fit!!!! Then the attendants come over and try to wedge the security bar or strap over me, causing phase one of the embarrassment, but with no success. Finally, it is determined that I’m too large for the ride and I must get off. This is phase 2 and the reason for the name, "The walk of shame". I have to get off the ride and be escorted to the exit. Mind you, all of this is happening with an audience of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of on lookers who I’m sure either get a kick out of it or feel bad. It’s more funny than anything now, but at the time it’s quite embarrassing.
Boo: WIth your size and athletic ability, did you ever want to play other pro sports??
Abyss: With my college football background, I often wanted to be a pro football player. However, my dream since I was a young child was to be a professional wrestler. Ever since I can remember I’ve wanted to be a pro wrestler. It’s a dream that has come true and a dream I’ve had as long as I can remember.
Boo: When you were 16 like me, what did you think you would end up becoming??
Abyss: Well, like I said, I always wanted to be a professional wrestler. As long as I can remember, it was my dream. I did however have other things I thought I might become. Most notably, I can remember wanting to become a police officer when I was 16. My grandfather was a police officer in Pennsylvania and I can remember looking up to him when I was 16. He would come home to see my grandma for lunch wearing his uniform with bullet proof vest and gun holstered. It was quite impressive especially at that age.
Boo: What type of music do you like???
Abyss: I like a little bit of everything, especially classic rock and country. I love Toby Keith, Taylor Swift, and Joe Nichols. I actually got to know Joe Nichols a little over the past couple years and it’s been really nice. I met Taylor Swift this past Christmas and that was awesome. My favorite music, however, is Pink Floyd and their originator, Roger Waters. They have been my favorite since early high school. I’ve seen them in concert probably 25 times at different venues around the country. Most recently, I saw Roger Waters at Madison Square Garden in New York last year. It was the best concert I’ve ever seen.
Boo: What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently???
Abyss: I’m a huge movie buff and love watching old and newer movies. I would have to say BIG STAN, with Rob Schneider. It was also the last ever movie appearance of the late David Carridine. It was never in the theaters. It went straight to DVD and I have no idea why because it was hilarious!!!! Its about a little guy who gets sentenced to prison for fraud and is afraid of all the bad things that are going to happen to him while incarcerated, so he enlists David Carridine's character to teach him how to defend himself in prison. It’s well put together and extremely funny. Check it out!!!
Boo: I think I will. You know what’s really funny? My younger sister Fivel actually did a fight scene with Rob Schneider in the film but it was cut out.
Abyss: Really? That’s awesome bro.
Boo: Yeah. Speaking of Fivel, in this column every time, she likes to have some fun and throw 5 random topics at you and see what your thoughts are.
“Five with Fivel“
Pepsi or Coke: Pepsi, it’s not as sweet as Coke.
Avatar: Record breaking
Miley Cyrus: Cheesy
Burger King or McDonald’s: Neither, Wendy’s!!
Rap Music: I like it. I like a little bit of everything. Country, R&B, and Classic Rock
Boo: While she isn’t exactly a rap star, what do you think of Lady Gaga???
Abyss: She’s a little on the weird side, but so am I. I can appreciate that. She definitely has her own unique look and style. I give her credit for being original and kinda out there. I’m out there too so she and I would probably get along. In addition to that, she’s pretty hot too!!!
Boo: Have you ever thought of doing films??? You would make a great bad guy!!
Abyss: Hey now Booboo, I would make a great good guy too ya know!! Haha. Seriously, I have thought about doing films and movies. I really think with my background and abilities, I would be a great actor in any kind of role. I have done a part as an extra in an independent movie and I loved it!!! I am confident that I would be very good at it and with my background; I could bring a lot to the right role in any movie. It’s definitely something that is a goal of mine and something that I will pursue more in the future.
Boo: What would be your dream wrestling match???
Abyss: That’s a tough question because there are several wrestlers that I haven’t wrestled yet that I would love too. But without a doubt, one name comes to mind right away. Hulk Hogan. The Hulkster is the man that put wrestling on the map to begin with and has had the dream career for any pro wrestler. He put pro wrestling into main stream America and the whole world for that matter. And he’s been doing it for over 25 years! He is the man, period. And now, that possibility actually exists because The Hulkster is here in TNA!!!! I just hope that Mr. Bischoff doesn’t get rid of me first. He seems to be pretty upset with me recently. I screwed up the Genesis pay-per-view by laying out Bobby Lashley and then I screwed up the next Impact by going to the ring and attacking Mr. Anderson. Mr. Bischoff is holding my future over Mick Foleys head if he doesn’t fall in line with what Mr. Bischoff wants. I sure hope Mick does as Mr. Bischoff says. Anyway, to answer your question, my dream wrestling match would be against Hulk Hogan.
Boo: That would be really cool. When did you start wrestling???
Abyss: I started wrestling in January of 1995 in Cincinnati, Ohio at Bonekrusher’s Pro Wrestling training center. It’s a great school and it still exists to this day. It has been in Cincinnati, Ohio for over 18 years!
Boo: How did you get involved in pro wrestling??
Abyss: Well, as I’ve said earlier, I always wanted to get into pro wrestling since I was a child. After receiving my Masters Degree from Ohio University, I worked in marketing for a couple hockey teams for about a year and a half. I enjoyed it and did well with it but I still had this dream of becoming a pro wrestler. So, I quit my job, a well paying job I might add, and enrolled at Bonekrusher’s Pro Wrestling School in Cincinnati. I trained there for quite some time before my first match. I was well prepared. I was trained by a man named Roger Ruffen. He is extremely knowledgeable and really did a great job preparing me. I owe a lot to him. I wrestled in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky for 6 years for him until 2002 when I received my first big break, going to Puerto Rico for a whole year to wrestle there. It’s a hot bed for wrestling and was a great experience that prepared me for TNA. I started with TNA when I came home from Puerto Rico in 2003. TNA gave me an opportunity and I made the most of it. TNA has done a great job building me. If it weren’t for TNA, I would not be where I am at today or even doing this interview with you. I owe everything I am and everything I have to TNA. I have been here basically since the beginning and there is nothing more in this world that I am more proud of. I’ve seen the company grow from no television to being an anchor on Spike TV. I have seen the company grow into a video game, toys, countless merchandise pieces, and touring the world both at home here in America but internationally as well.
Boo: Do you see yourself as the TNA World Champion again one day??? If so, how do you plan on getting it back??
Abyss: I do see myself as a future TNA World Champion. I was able to attain it once by defeating Sting but wasn’t able to hold onto to it very long which is a testament to how competitive the TNA heavyweight division is. I plan on working my butt off and taking every opportunity that comes my way to get myself back into the heavyweight title chase. My plan is to focus which has been a problem for me over the years because of all the psychiatric treatment and issues Iv’e had. I’ve put that behind me and even though I’m still unstable in many respects, I’m focused on steamrolling through the competition and getting myself back into the title picture. That is if Mr. Bischoff gives me that opportunity. He's threatening me and my career through Mick Foley. Mick has promised me that everything is going to be ok but I am so scared right now.
Boo: Do you think Mick Foley is going to fall in line with what Eric Bischoff wants from him???
Abyss: I certainly hope so. I look up to and admire Mick very much. I am proud to call him my friend now. I know it’s been rough on him too with the way that Mr. Bischoff has treated him since arriving in TNA. But, Mr. Bischoff has already taken Jeremy Borash (JB) off TV and he is threatening me as well. I’m so concerned and scared with what’s going to happen to me if Mick doesn’t fall in line. Only time will tell, but Mick has assured me that everything is going to be ok so I have to trust in Mick right now. That’s exactly what I’m going to do.
Boo: Ok, the last question is one I will ask everyone- Who is your favorite wrestler?
Abyss: Wow that’s a great question Booboo, but a tough one to answer because there are so many wrestlers that I have huge respect for and am big fans of. From Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair to Sting, Samoa Joe and AJ Styles, there are so many wrestlers that are my favorite and I have huge admiration for. If I had to choose just one right now, Kurt Angle comes to mind because of his mental and physical toughness as well as his intensity in the ring. I’ve had the privilege of wrestling Kurt on several different occasions on house shows, TV, and a couple pay per views and no matter what the setting, Kurt’s intensity is second to none. If you don’t match his intensity in the ring, he will run you over. He is a wrestling machine in every aspect of this industry. Not to mention that he and I have had some classic battles in the ring and some memorable moments as well. Working with him has truly been an honor as well as extremely exciting. I look forward to many more battles with Kurt in the future.
Boo: Good stuff. Thank you for taking the time to spend 15 Minutes with me today. You are my favorite wrestler in TNA and it means a lot. I want to wish you the best as you continue in your career and goal of winning the world title again!
Abyss: Thank you Mr. Booboo. I really enjoy doing things like this and if you ever want to get more into the monster known as me, I also write a Blog here on TNAWrestling.com, Monster Blog!
