“GURU” OR GREEDY? SONJAY SHOWS HIS TRUE COLORS?
By Gerry Strauss

In the ultra-competitive world of TNA Wrestling, selfishness is rampant. The quality of talent is so high that, in order to truly succeed, one must focus on their own needs above all else. Trust is a rare commodity, and suspicion…paranoia, even… is an all-too-familiar fixture around the locker room. Wrestlers understand it, live with it, and are accustomed to the art of keeping anyone from getting too close.

When two individuals, full of talents, heart and dedication to their chosen sport, choose to tackle their careers together, it shows. When two young guns shun the norm, thrive in spite of it, and, even better, actually seem to have fun doing it, the excitement is contagious.

Such was the lives and times of “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt, two of TNA’s most dynamic athletes. Upstarts in the exciting X-Division, the two quickly found that they had similar styles of wrestling, training and living. Both knew when to maintain focus, and both knew when to cut loose and have some fun. Without placing limits on their burgeoning careers, they quickly won fans over with their individual and collective innovativeness, and drove each other to become better wrestlers in the process.

For many months, Lethal and Dutt were great friends. When one scored a victory, the other was there with congratulations. When one suffered a loss, the other was quick to encourage him to learn from his mistakes and press on. When Lethal won the X-Division Championship, no one could be happier than Sonjay Dutt… on the surface, anyway.

Indeed, while Dutt struggled to break into the upper echelon of TNA’s rankings, “Black Machismo” was doing just that, winning over scores of fans with his wild personality while scoring career-making victories over the likes of Kurt Angle. Despite Dutt’s longer tenure in TNA, it was Lethal who began to garner more attention, a fact that may have set the stage for what was to come.

Still, Dutt was still the smooth one, the charming one… ”The Guru”… that is, until So Cal Val came into the picture. A fixture at TNA events, it was obvious to all that Val and Lethal had taken a liking to one another. Innocent flirting eventually led to a full-fledged courtship. Suddenly, Lethal and Val were the “it” couple in TNA. Once again, Dutt was an afterthought.

As the Lethal-Val romance developed, it was clear that Sonjay was doing everything possible to interfere. As seen in video footage broadcast on iMPACT, Dutt would “coincidentally” show up wherever the lovebirds were set to meet up, often disrupting an otherwise intimate atmosphere. In fact, the only person who truly seemed blind to Dutt’s self-serving actions was Lethal himself, content to rely on his trusting instincts.

It wasn’t until the very apex of the Lethal/Val romance, their Slammiversary wedding ceremony, that Dutt’s true intentions were revealed. In humiliating fashion, Lethal’s supposed “best man” stopped the proceedings to announce that it was he who should be marrying Val, not “Black Machismo.” Dutt proceeded to physically attack his now-former best friend in front of the world, ruining what should have been the most special day in both Lethal and Val’s lives.

Was Sonjay, as he claimed, acting out of his own love for So Cal Val? Or, as many speculate, was he simply trying to reclaim the spotlight from his former partner? For months, “The Guru” has been doing his best to spread the message of love (while collecting money from fans for charitable organizations, mind you), but is Dutt actually in love with anyone but himself?

Certainly, the love between Dutt and Lethal is a thing of the past. An enraged “Black Machismo” has rightfully attacked Dutt on more than one occasion over the past several weeks, and while “The Guru” has managed to slip away each time, it has become increasingly clear that a head-to-head confrontation is the only thing that will put an end to this war. That match will happen this Sunday at Victory Road, live on Pay-Per-View.

This much is clear: Sonjay Dutt has broken up a team, a friendship, and a wedding. Now, Jay Lethal aims to simply break him. In TNA, selfishness is often the key to survival, but will it end up being Dutt’s undoing?
